How to Spot a Dishonest Cash-for-Gold Shop: 9 Red Flags

The gold buying trade has plenty of straightforward operators and a handful who rely on customers not knowing what to look for. These nine signs are the ones that matter, and every one of them is visible within the first few minutes of a visit.

1. Your jewellery goes out of sight

There is no legitimate reason for your items to be taken into a back room. Testing and weighing take seconds and can be done in front of you. If your gold leaves the counter, ask for it back.

2. You cannot see the scale

A display turned away from you, or a reading that is announced rather than shown, is a problem. Ask to see it. A refusal ends the conversation.

3. Everything is weighed together

If 10k, 14k and 22k items go on the scale in one pile, the resulting number cannot be fair to the higher-karat pieces. Karat sorting before weighing is basic practice.

4. No karat test is performed

A buyer who reads the stamp and quotes without testing is either guessing or assuming the lowest karat. Stamps wear, stamps are missing, and stamps are occasionally wrong.

5. No photo ID is requested

Ontario second-hand dealer rules require sellers to be identified. A shop that skips this is not following the regulations that exist to protect both sides, which says a great deal about its other practices.

6. The offer has a countdown on it

"This price is only good today" is a sales tactic, not a market reality. Any honest buyer expects you to think about it and will still be there tomorrow.

7. Deductions appear without explanation

Refining fees, testing charges, handling costs, assay fees — if a number is being subtracted, you are entitled to know what it is for. Vague deductions are how a headline rate becomes a disappointing total.

8. The quoted rate is dramatically above everyone else

Gold is a commodity. No shop has access to a secret market. A rate far above the local norm is usually recovered later through deductions, an understated karat or an understated weight. Compare the final cash figure, not the advertised rate.

9. Nobody will answer a direct question

Ask what karat a piece tested at. Ask what it weighed. Ask whether any fee applies. Three plain questions with three plain answers is the minimum standard. Deflection is the answer.
