Storing and Insuring Gold Bullion in Canada: Home Safes, Banks and Vaults

Practical storage options for physical gold in Canada — home safes, safety deposit boxes and private vaults — plus insurance realities and record keeping.

Owning physical gold means solving a problem that paper assets do not have: it exists somewhere, and someone could take it. The good news is that gold is compact — a meaningful holding fits in a shoebox — and the practical options in Canada are few enough to compare quickly.

Home storage

A bolted, fire-rated safe hidden away from obvious locations is the most convenient option and the most exposed. Convenience is real: you can access it any time and nobody records your visits. The risk is equally real, and most standard Ontario home insurance policies cap coverage for precious metals at a low figure unless you schedule them specifically.

  • Bolt the safe to structure; portable safes are simply carried away
  • Do not discuss holdings publicly, including on social media
  • Keep the inventory list somewhere other than inside the safe
  • Check your policy wording for a precious metals sub-limit before assuming you are covered

Bank safety deposit boxes

Boxes are cheap, discreet and secure against theft, but contents are not insured by the bank and access is limited to branch hours. Some Canadian banks have reduced or closed box services in recent years, so confirm availability before relying on it. Private insurance for box contents is available and usually inexpensive.

Private vaults and allocated storage

Specialist vault operators offer insured, allocated storage where specific bars are recorded against your name. This suits larger holdings and comes with an annual fee, typically a small percentage of value. Insist on allocated rather than pooled storage, and on the right to physically inspect or withdraw.

Records that make selling easy

  1. A written inventory: item, refiner or mint, weight, purity, serial number
  2. Photographs of each item and of any assay packaging
  3. Purchase receipts, which help establish cost base if it ever matters
  4. A note of where everything is stored, kept with your will or with a trusted person

Handling and condition

Keep bullion dry and leave packaging sealed. Handle coins by the edge if you handle them at all. Gold does not tarnish, but .9999 coins mark easily and silver will tone in humid conditions — neither reduces metal content, and neither reduces what we pay.

When you are ready to sell, bring it as stored. We verify everything at the desk at 1646 Victoria Park Avenue and pay at the rate posted on this site.
