Johnson Matthey gold bars

Johnson Matthey stopped producing gold bars for the retail market, which turned its poured and minted bars into a collector favourite as well as a bullion product. Canadian holdings are heavy in JM metal because the refiner ran a Brampton operation for decades and supplied bank programmes across Ontario.

How we verify it

Weight and dimensions, allowing for the wider tolerances of poured bars
Ultrasound through the body of larger poured bars
Serial and stamp inspection against known JM die styles
Surface conductivity testing on unpackaged bars

Good to know

Some JM bars trade slightly above generic bar value because collectors want them. We will say so if that applies to yours.
Do not sand, file or clean a poured bar — original surface is part of how it is authenticated.

Selling Johnson Matthey to us

Poured JM bars vary slightly in shape and finish, which is normal and does not affect what we pay — the scale and the assay decide. Older bars in tired plastic sleeves are welcome exactly as they are.

Because JM retail bars are discontinued, availability is entirely dependent on what comes in. Ask us to note your interest and we will let you know when one arrives.
