Britannias and gold sovereigns

British gold is common in the GTA thanks to generations of family holdings. Sovereigns are small, 22 karat, and contain 7.32 g of fine gold; modern Britannias are .9999 and come in the familiar one-ounce format. Both are bought here and both are checked individually, because dates and mint marks occasionally matter more than metal.

How we verify it

Weight to 0.01 g against the sovereign standard of 7.98 g total
Diameter and thickness, where sovereign copies most often fail
Date and mint mark recorded before anything is valued as scrap metal
Magnetic and conductivity checks

Good to know

Jewellery mounts and bezels are removed before weighing and returned to you.
Cleaned or polished sovereigns lose collector premium, so leave them as they are.
